Mexico Part 2 | Los Cabos

I've only just realized we have been in Los Cabos for almost 6 months now. As I mentioned in my previous post, we used this as our base and also travelled to other places in between. Tomorrow we will leave to go back to Europe for awhile, starting with Spain. We are leaving just in time now as the weather here in Los Cabos is getting worse - extremely hot (high 30s) and almost hurricane season. We have had a few thunderstorms here these days when in the first months there was no rain at all. The worst part is all the insects that come after the rain. Flying rain and what looks like desert termites that somehow get in our house. However even if the weather was still nice here, I'm not sure if I will miss this place. It's nice to be for people who just want to lay on the beach and relax, but there really isn't anything to do. The sunsets are nice though. The photo above is taken from our rooftop.

During our time here we've taken some day trips and weekend trips to nearby places - mainly Todos Santos, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz and Cabo Pulmo which you'll see in this post.

On the outside it looks nice but we've had a lot of issues here like water and gas running out, water turning off on its own, things breaking, etc. When we first arrived, we didn't realize that the water and gas do not refill automatically. You need to call the companies to come and refill it when you're almost out.

The bay is very popular so we had to get there early. They only let in a limited number of people per day, and only allowed to go in within 2 time slots for 2 hours I think. There is usually a huge line up of cars prior to each time slot. I think we got lucky because we arrived right when the first time slot ended, and they were nice enough to let us in. It's a popular place because the entire bay is very shallow, so you can walk through the whole area without having to swim.

It has definitely been the longest gap in all my (14!!) years of blogging. Since April we've had this place as our base. The first weeks we had some friends visiting from Canada so I didn't have much time. Then in May we spent a couple of weeks in Mexico City and Oaxaca. From there I visited Toronto in June, for the first time since we embarked on this "world trip". It was nice to see my family and dog after so long. I spent a couple weeks there before returning to Los Cabos. Now we are here for a couple more weeks before we go back to Europe/Spain.

So there isn't much to do in Los Cabos. If you're just coming for vacation, I think 3 days is enough to see the sights and everything. Pretty much the only place we go is the beach lol. There's also some nearby towns we visited a few times which I will show in the next post.

The best garlic shrimp I've ever had! This restaurant is called Pata Salada. They specialize in seafood. For the most part, the food in Cabo is not really good (mostly overpriced and touristy) but I like this place a lot.

You have to book a boat tour here which only takes about 20 minutes. Along the way you see some beaches including Lovers Beach in the photo above. We had the option of staying on the beach for an hour. Then we got picked up by the boat again to bring us to the Arch.

We visited three of them. The main one is Olde Hansa which is one of my favourite restaurants here. We came here for the first time on our first day in Tallinn then several times after. It's a huge space, with 3 (or 4) floors. The staff are dressed in medieval garb and even speak the part (and they reuse the same jokes). Sometimes they have live music playing themed music. Inside it's quite dark and only lit with candles. Even though it's a touristy place, the food is really good. The photo above shows their entrance, where they have a stand selling freshly roasted honey-coated almonds.

Helsinki, Finland + thoughts on the war

As I make this post, we are still in Tallinn. I can't believe this has been our home for about 5 months already. Time flew by fast but I also feel like we have been here forever, and that it has been winter forever. Last year at this time we were in Thailand which is quite the difference in temperature. I miss the warmer weather (and sun, which we don't get much of here).

We will finally leave before the end of this month and will head west to the Americas (I will reveal the destination later on). I'm looking forward to it but not for the long arduous journey of ~50 hours in transit. To be honest I've been nervous these weeks being in the Baltics with the Russia-Ukraine war going on. I know the chances of us being affected is low (as Estonia is under the protection of NATO) and Russia is kept busy with Ukraine for now. However this is a former country of USSR and we are in close proximity. If anything happens here it would likely mean world war 3. I really hope it will not escalate into that. I can't believe war is still a possibility now. It has always been something we learn about in history class; a thing of the past. I read before that world wars happen after those who have lived through it/with first hand accounts of it it have died, which would be true in this case as all WWII veterans are passing away. I know that throughout the years there have been smaller scale wars as well, in other parts of the world. I guess since it's happening in Europe now everyone is getting more worried and paying more attention. I am lucky to have been born in Canada and grew up in a country without the fear of war (or actual fear of anything really). I never had to worry about becoming a refugee or even large scale terrorist attacks there. I never even kept up with world news in the past which I feel is a privilege. Sometimes I miss being a kid and being ignorant to these things.

I feel very sad for the people in Ukraine who have been affected by this (also the Russians who are suddenly cut off from the world). It's crazy to think that a few weeks ago they were living their normal lives and then everything changes literally overnight. Families being torn apart, people having to escape and start new lives with only a small suitcase of possessions (and those are considered the lucky ones). While those stuck there live in fear of being killed any day with dwindling supplies of food and other necessities.

Pandemics usually occur before or after wars as well for some reason. It's interesting now covid seems to have suddenly disappeared overnight (except in Asia) as people move onto the next world issue. Maybe we heading into a tough decade of depression again.

Anyways, during our last weeks in Tallinn I will try to catch up as much as I can with my posts. I still have posts from Thailand that I still need to make =\ Here are some photos from a weekend trip to Helsinki. It was my 2nd time visiting this city. I first visited when I was 15 years old on a trip around Scandinavia and Russia. I've always wanted to visit Russia again since I really loved it back then. But I guess that trip will have to wait a little longer now..

We came for a day after Riga. We didn't do much here. Just walked around a bit to explore the city centre. Out of the other Baltic cities it seemed like the largest and most modern. Lithuania was a country I've never had a desire to visit before nor knew anything about. For example I would have never thought it'd look like this:

The scenery along the way was really beautiful as we just had a big snowfall. All the trees were blanketed in snow. It was truly a winter wonderland. I think I enjoyed the journey more than the destination. It's funny to think that I am from Canada but rarely witnessed scenes like these there, which is what foreigners probably think all of Canada would be like.

When we arrived in Riga it was already dark. Up here the sun goes down at around 3:30pm so we don't get many hours of sunlight in a day. Also by the time we settled in the hotel and went out for food, we realized there was a curfew in the city (due to COVID) and restaurants were just closing up. We ended up having no choice but to order pizza to eat in the room lol. So then the next day we explored the city a bit before heading to Vilnius, Lithuania.

We celebrated Christmas and New Year's here in Tallinn. The past couple years have felt quite strange due to the pandemic and our travels. I can't quite keep track of time. The year went by in a blur. Last year for the holidays we were in Morocco, which doesn't even feel like a year ago already. Sometimes I forget which month it is and it didn't feel like Christmas at all this year. Even though in Tallinn, we were in the right atmosphere for it - lots and lots of snow and a Christmas market we often walked by. For new year's we walked out to an open space close to our place and saw the fireworks around us. In Tallinn there isn't one central place for the celebrations and fireworks. They do them in several places around the city and on a smaller scale.

Rewinding back to October, after visiting Strasbourg, we took the train to Luxembourg. We mainly went there to visit my friend Anouk who I haven't seen in years! If you've followed my blog for awhile, we first met in person back in 2012 in Paris - both of us were on vacation. She lives in Luxembourg so I've always wanted to visit her there someday. Finally 9 years later I made it lol. In between we've taken trips together to Capri, London and Western Canada, and she's also visited me in Toronto a few times. Hope we will be able to meet again soon..somewhere else in the world!

We stayed in Luxembourg for 2 nights. It's a tiny place and possible to see everything within hours. Unfortunately I was quite sick during those days (it was right after I took my first vaccine dose as well, which was probably the cause) but had a great time. It was nice to catch up. It is a beautiful little place and felt kind of like a fairytale village or one you see on chocolate boxes.

I've organized most of my photos from the past months now and I'm so overwhelmed with all the posts I still have to make lol. I still have many from Thailand and Croatia which were during the summer months. Then a lot from the quick trips in between - Bosnia, Luxembourg, Paris..and most recently these past weekends' trips to Riga, Vilnius and Helsinki. I realize now how many different cities we visited during this big trip. I'm now at Country #39 (my visited countries throughout my life)! I will get through all the blog posts *eventually* though as I always enjoy reading back on my life many years later. I do wish I kept up with the posts throughout the travels (so that I'm not months behind and can provide my thoughts for each day) but it was kind of impossible..

We're currently still in Tallinn (I finally got approved for the Digital Nomad Visa so I am allowed to stay!) which we will have as our base for the upcoming months/possibly the final months abroad.

Here are the photos from our trip to Strasbourg in October. I mentioned in a previous post that the main reason for coming to France was for me to get my COVID vaccine. Before Strasbourg we were in Munich (that I already posted about) and after this we went to Luxembourg. It was a very quick trip of only 2 nights, so we didn't get to see much but I really enjoyed it. I love their style of buildings. A mix of French and German influence.

I learned later that (at least in Paris), those rooms are called "chambre de bonne" which were maids' rooms/servants quarters. They are tiny, like under 200 square feet and washrooms are communal. These days they can be rented or purchased for a low cost.

Blog posts from that trip will come eventually. It was kind of a "last minute decision" to return to Estonia after that. Well, I didn't have many options anyways since it's the only Schengen country I'm allowed to be in at the moment. At the time of this post I'm unfortunately still waiting on the result from my Digital Nomad Visa application..the deadline is in a few days so that will determine what happens after Estonia (if I am forced to leave Schengen).

Now it has gotten a lot colder here in Tallinn and we even got snow a couple days ago, though it has all melted since then. The Christmas Market here is set to open tomorrow which I'm very excited for! I really love Christmas Markets in Europe, and I heard this one in Tallinn is rated one of the best. It's very sad that the markets of Germany are closed this year since they received an influx of COVID cases these past weeks. I've always wanted to go to the ones there. We were lucky to have visited (Munich) last month when it was still relatively normal.

Tallinn Part 1 | Around the Old Town

Now we are already at the end of our time in Tallinn, Estonia. We've been here for a month already and I'm only doing the first post from here now. I mentioned previously that I've applied for an extension to stay here longer (since my "visa-free" time in Schengen is ending) but they didn't get back to me yet. So I'm still unsure how the outcome of that will be. This weekend we will be going to Paris for a quick trip which will be the rest of my allowed days in Schengen..I'm sad we can only go for a few days (since it is my favourite city) but I guess I should be grateful to even go lol. Should have planned this out better.

I'm also sad to be leaving Tallinn. Even if my visa gets approved and we do end up coming back, I will miss the place we are staying because it's literally the perfect location and we have a lot of favourite daily spots that we go to. Tallinn is a very nice city to live but if you're coming just for the sake of tourism and sightseeing, there isn't much. A day would be enough if you're just coming for a visit. It's a fairly inexpensive place with prices between western and eastern European costs, the food is really good and there's cozy cafes which is important if you work online (like us). It feels like a mix between Scandinavian countries and Russia. There's also a nice mix of old and new architecture. So overall it is a pretty comfortable place. The only thing I don't like is that it gets dark at 4pm and it's pretty cold already.

During the month we were here I also wanted to do short trips to Riga (Latvia) and also Helsinki (Finland) since they are only a few hours away but due to rising COVID cases (and a lockdown in Latvia), we were not able to go. I would've reeeeally loved to visit St. Petersburg (Russia) again but I think the country is also closed now and I would've had to apply for a visa. The time here flew by really fast though. I have a few posts lined up for Tallinn. Here are some random photos from around the old town and our frequently visited spots.

It's set in a large house with about 7 different rooms. It's really cozy here and I love this style. I wonder why there are not more "house style" cafes/restaurants in Toronto. I would definitely go lol.

We are currently still in Tallinn, Estonia (where I've yet to make the first blog post of..) and have been here for almost a month now. It's November and the weather is quite cold and rainy these days. Like 10 degrees max. Last year we managed to avoid full blown winter weather as our winter months were spent at Canary Islands, Morocco then Thailand. I miss the heat actually lol. Those days seem like so long ago. I don't mind winter and snow so much but I don't like rain. I also don't have a proper winter coat or snow boots with me on this trip so I'll probably need to buy some if the weather gets very cold. I've always wanted to visit Lapland (Finland) or northern Norway during winter to see the Northern Lights. Will see if we have the opportunity to go this year. Then I will really need some new Moon Boots lol.

I'm currently trying to extend my stay in the Schengen area (under the "Digital Nomad Visa" program). As a Canadian I can only be here 3 months out of every 6 months cycle. So my time is supposed to expire soon if I don't receive an extension. I guess that will determine where we will be next.

Now I'm trying to wrap up my posts from months ago that I'm behind on. Here is Dubrovnik in the summertime. It was quite hot as you can see. The opposite of where I am now. Taking a walk along the "Walls of Dubrovnik" is the city's main attraction. You get the best views up there. I'm probably one of the last people to watch Game of Thrones but when we visited Croatia I wanted to finally watch it to see the scenes in real life where it was filmed. It took us a couple months to get through the series. I guess that's one thing that Dubrovnik is famous for now and reason for their boost of tourists these years. They had a lot of Game of Thrones merchandise stores. Dubrovnik was actually on my travel bucket list for a long time. I'm glad I finally got to visit! It is a really beautiful place with an amazing atmosphere - especially during the summer nights. It's also a very photogenic city. Everywhere you point the camera at would be a postcard-worthy shot.

Mainly Auschwitz, however I haven't had the chance to visit Poland yet. So when we were in Munich, we decided to visit Dachau which is quite close to the city (approximately 45 minutes away) and very easy to reach by public transportation. It was a unique experience and I'm glad to have visited. I don't think it's anything comparable to Auschwitz though as I know it is on a much larger scale with original buildings, original artifacts, posessions of the victims and many structures left intact.

In Dachau it is a "chilling" feeling standing on the site of what happened so many years ago but all the buildings and (most) artifacts are reproductions. They also don't have the barracks structures anymore. The whole site was mainly a large building with exhibits explaining the wars and Holocaust. We also weren't allowed to enter some parts of it due to COVID. Also the main entrance gate (above) is a reproduction as the real gate was stolen some years ago. They did eventually recover the real one though and it is displayed in the exhibit.

It was built in 1589 (as a brewery) and remains as one of Munich's main attractions. There is a lot of history in the place - it was where the Nazi Party held their first meeting/where Hitler made his first speech.

I really love it there. It's huge and the main hall is under these gorgeous ceilings. All the tables in this part are the long wooden ones that you share with other people. Patrons are usually a mix of tourists, locals and the "Regulars". They dress in traditional Bavarian clothing and have their usual tables and personal beer steins. According to the website, there's about 100 groups of active Regulars and the oldest table has been held for 70 years. I would love to experience Oktoberfest here someday. The place is usually very busy and it's not unusual to see a line outside. We came during a quieter time of day, though it was still quite busy. I think they also lowered the capacity a bit due to COVID.

The standard size of beer here is 1L. I got a Radler (beer + lemonade). I usually don't like beer or the taste of alcohol in general but I looove radler. They make it the best here. I've tried radler in other places (like in Toronto) and they taste like a completely different drink.

Munich Part 1 | Around Old Town & COVID Tests

We are currently in Tallinn as I make this post. A lot has happened these past weeks that I still need to update about. After we left Spain (about 2 weeks ago), we took a whirlwind trip through Munich, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. We only stayed 2 nights at each place which seemed super rushed to me (after this year of "slow" travel where we would stay at least a month per city). I now wish we had at least 3 days in each place. We chose these destinations due to a few reasons. Main reason being..we had to reach Luxembourg since I wanted to visit a friend of mine who lives there. I also needed to stop in France for the vaccine.

From Spain, the best airport to fly out of was Madrid. Due to COVID there are less flight routes so many routes required layovers. Madrid to Munich was a convenient flight as it was short and didn't include any layovers. From Munich it was also convenient to get to Luxembourg. So we decided to go there, and I also had to do a stop in France as I wanted to finally get my COVID vaccine. Out of a countless number of countries I've checked with, France is currently the only country that allows non-residents to take the vaccine. I was only a tourist for 2 days yet I was allowed to register and receive it free of charge. Next month I would have to go back to somewhere in France for the 2nd dose though (I'm thinking Paris!!)

Strasbourg was the most convenient city located in France with proximity to Munich and Luxembourg so that's why we chose it. Also, it's a beautiful place and I've always wanted to visit! Travelling during this time has been a really exciting and interesting experience, because we've been choosing our next destinations as we go along. We never have anything planned more than a few weeks ahead as we always need to follow COVID entry requirements and priorities of the time (for example the vaccine in France, and also our stay in Croatia a couple months ago was because I needed to stay in a non-Schengen country for awhile). So it makes us visit places we otherwise would probably not have.

Anyways, we are now in Tallinn for at least a month. We are really enjoying it so far. I would have never thought to visit Estonia before. Let's see if I'm able to catch up on my blog a bit during these weeks. I've organized my photos and everything now and I am at least 27 blog posts behind (!!!)...I still have posts from Thailand, Croatia, Bosnia, etc to post lol. Plus the ones from this recent trip and then the Tallinn posts. I'm likely going to still be doing travel posts well after we are back in Toronto..

I've visited Munich once back in 2012 so this was my second time visiting the city. Munich feels like a quintessential German town to me. I really love it there, especially the food and style of buildings.

Every country we've been to since Spain (Germany, France, Luxembourg and Estonia) have the requirement of presenting a COVID document in order to enter restaurants, cafes or public events. This can be proof of vaccination, recovery from COVID or a negative COVID test. For me it would be the negative test as I don't have either of the first two yet. If I was not travelling, I wouldn't mind this requirement but since we are travelling..going out to places is a big part of the experience. In Munich they had a LOT of testing stations and it was all free of charge.

I got one done here in Munich, in Strasbourg (that cost me 25 euros though), and in Luxembourg (that was also free). Each test is only valid for 48 hours. I've honestly lost count of how many times I did it since we first embarked on this big trip...however I think it's close to 20 times now lol. I've done it twice so far in Tallinn. On the first day to enter a restaurant, I didn't even think of this requirement. So I had to buy a self test from a pharmacy and do it outside the restaurant, then show them the result. I don't really mind these rules as it is a trade off for travelling during the pandemic and all.

I am not strongly for or against the vaccine. But it would make travelling a lot easier. In about a month I will have my 2nd dose.

Spain Part 3 | A few days in Madrid

A few weeks ago we visited Madrid for several days. This was my second time there. The first time was in winter 2018 when I was quite sick (with a cold) so this time I was able to enjoy it more. I really love the city now. The architecture is very beautiful and there is a lot to do. It's also a very walkable city with lots of cozy streets.

Now our time in Spain is coming to an end. Next week we will go back to Madrid for a day before quick stops in Munich, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. I'm excited but not with the thought of dragging around 4 suitcases (plus carry-ons) on the trains lol. After this year of "slow travel"/staying at least a month in each place, having only a couple days each at the upcoming cities seems so rushed to me.

I really love them. In fact, the oldest continuously running restaurant in the world is located here in the city but we didn't get a chance to go. We did to go this one called Casa Alberto which opened in 1827. It was located right beside our hotel. It's cool to think about all the people that used to come here (including some well-known figures).

They are quaint, small towns along the northern coast of Spain a few hours' drive from La Coruna. The photo above is Cudillero. It reminds me of Cinque Terre or Positano in Italy but on a much smaller scale (and less colourful). The following photos below are from Ribadeo. We stopped here for lunch.

We arrived a few weeks ago to La Coruna where we have our base for now. If you've followed my blog for awhile you may have seen my posts from here in the past. It is my boyfriend's hometown and where his family lives so we've come together a few times already..I think this is my 4th time visiting. For the first couple of weeks we had 2 friends come to visit from Toronto. So I haven't had much time at all to keep up with my blog and also work and everything, it is quite overwhelming. I am now very behind on all my posts and I don't know when I'll be able to finish with them all lol. I can't believe in the past I used to do daily travel posts on some of my trips.

Right now as I'm making this blog post we are in Madrid for a few days. We came once around Christmas 2018 (my first time). I really like it here. I will hopefully have those posts up soon but for now you can follow me on Instagram for some live updates!

Here is a big post of the past few weeks around La Coruna and Santiago de Compostela! Here in the photo above is their famous landmark, the Tower of Hercules. We accidentally chose the foggiest day to walk up there but it made for some cool drone shots.

Tomorrow we will leave for Spain (to my boyfriend's hometown of La Coruna). This month went by really fast. I guess because we were quite busy here and managed to take a few staycations away (Rovinj, Split, Dubrovnik, Mostar, Plitvice..all of which I will post about eventually lol). I really enjoyed Zagreb more than I thought I would and will miss it. I admit that before we came, I thought it would kind of a boring city. It was good to have our base here. I really enjoyed Croatia overall and the side trips were a lot of fun. We also got pretty nice weather. So next month we will be in Spain and going to do a side trip to Luxembourg to visit my friend which I'm very excited about!

The most famous is the Museum of Broken Relationships. It was so packed when we went there on a random Monday. It's such a unique concept and at first I was sceptical about it but I actually really enjoyed it. The museum displays various items sent in by people who have experienced a broken relationship - items from the relationship that they kept. Each piece is accompanied by a short story about it. Mostly they are romantic relationships but there's a section for family broken relationships (death). Some stories were funny and some were sad.

There's a lot more objects but I won't post them all. I highly recommend a visit if you're ever in Zagreb!

Dubrovnik Part 1 | Around the Old Town

Last weekend we took a trip to Dubrovnik, Split and also across the border to Mostar. Dubrovnik was a place that has always been on my bucket list. I really loved it there but I think I was more impressed by Rovinj. Probably because I've always wanted to visit Dubrovnik and had very high expectations. I did still enjoy it a lot though, especially at night when the place comes alive. We took a day trip to Mostar as well (in Bosnia) and had to do a COVID rapid test in order to enter the country, then to return back to Croatia. It was a bit of a hassle and endless border crossings, but worth it. I will talk more about that in a future post. Then on the way back to Zagreb, we stopped in Split for a night. Split is another very popular destination around here but I didn't find it to be anything special. If I didn't visit Dubrovnik first (and other more beautiful coastal cities), I think I would have really loved Split. But I would have been fine with not visiting it. It's still a nice place but I found it too touristy and not really beautiful.

Anyways, we stayed in Dubrovnik for 3 nights. I would have liked to spend more time there to just relax and explore more of the surrounding areas. Here are some random photos walking around the old town.

It was so beautiful at every corner that I couldn't stop. Here are some drone shots to show the unique layout of this charming town. I think it looks bigger from above than it really is. Well it probably takes about 30 minutes to walk all around (if you are not stopping for photos of course). I think we walked all over a few times but there's probably some hidden turns we didn't get to explore.

Tomorrow we are heading to Dubrovnik and Split for a few days, that's why I wanted to wrap up this short Rovinj series. I guess the remainder of my Thailand posts will have to keep waiting lol.

This looks good but it actually tasted horrible lol. It's always worth quickly Googling a restaurant to see their reviews/rating before deciding to go and eat there. For example this restaurant was rated a 2.8/5 which we found out after sitting down for a table. Most of the restaurants around here are good/rated high though so we didn't realize we would be so unlucky to choose the worst rated one. But even with bad food, this place was always full of people (I guess meaning no motivation to improve). The seafood in my seafood pasta was questionable..and the sauce was really watery. Like if you took a can of pasta sauce, mixed it with a lot of water to make it go a longer way.

Rovinj Part 1 | A Hidden Gem of Croatia

Some days ago, I saw a photo similar to this one on Instagram and remembered it was somewhere in Croatia. I found out it's Rovinj. The name sounded familiar to me but I didn't know anything about it. I was happy to find out it was only a few hours away from Zagreb so we planned a short trip there. I mainly wanted to get some drone shots of the town since it looks super cool and unique sticking out from the mainland like that. I ended up loving the entire place a lot more than I thought I would. I will say it's one of my favourite European towns of its kind. When you search images of Rovinj, it's mainly this scene from above. What you don't see much of are the interior shots of the town - a quintessential small European village atmosphere; historic cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, laundry hanging out windows and cozy restaurants/cafes tucked in alleyways. So it was a nice surprise for me as I LOVE towns like that. Especially if they are also by the sea.

I was also surprised to see a lot of people there. Mainly they were domestic tourists and many Europeans from neighbouring countries. However I feel at a more international level, Rovinj still seems like a hidden gem. When people visit Croatia they usually go to Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, Plitvice Lakes etc but Rovinj and the Istria region doesn't seem as popular yet. I guess if I was coming to Croatia any other time (during a regular trip), I'd probably only visit Dubrovnik. I've wanted to go there for the longest time. We will plan a short trip there as well this month.

Zagreb Part 1 | First Days in Croatia!

Finally here is my first post of Zagreb! This is the 34th country I've visited I believe. Now we've been here about a week. I've always wanted to visit Croatia but to be honest I always picture the Dalmatian Coast when I think of the country, and have always wanted to visit Dubrovnik. For our month in the country, our base will be Zagreb. It was the only city we were able to fly direct into and for a longer-term stay, I think it is most convenient. At first I didn't have any expectations of Zagreb and was wondering if we should've stayed along the coast instead..but now I really like it here. We will be doing small trips to different areas starting with Rovinj tomorrow! I first discovered Rovinj on Instagram and am excited to be able to go. I hope we'll also be able to visit places in Slovenia (Ljubljana and Piran) as well as we are literally on the border, but I'm not sure what the entry requirements will be at this time.

Zagreb reminds me slightly of Prague (where I've visited) and what I imagine Poland to be like (which I've never visited). It looks like Eastern Europe but not to an extreme. There are some communist style buildings and a lot of graffiti around the city. It feels very safe here and the streets are very clean. We've also been getting nice sunny weather every day. It's a very quiet and laid-back city. Kind of feels like being in the outskirts of a larger city (or a large "small town") but in fact we are in the country's capital. I think if you're taking a regular vacation here, 1 or 2 days is enough to explore the city as it's fairly small. There are a LOT of random and quirky museums (for example the Museum of Broken Relationships and a mushroom museum too lol). Overall I am enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.

We've been spending our days just walking around the city and sitting at cafes to read. A nice change from Bangkok where we were confined for a month. Thailand is still very bad with rising COVID cases. I'm glad we got out in time but it makes me sad to think of the country struggling to deal with it.

I think my favourite area of the city so far is here around the large park

Koh Samui Part 8 | Island Life

If you follow me on social media, you'll know that we are now in Croatia! We arrived in Zagreb several days ago. I guess we got out of Thailand just in time as the covid cases there continue to rise these days. I will talk more about Croatia in my next post (when I get around to uploading those photos from my camera). Zagreb is a very quiet and laid back city. I am enjoying it so far.

For now, I still have a lot of Thailand posts left. I don't know how I managed daily travel posts in the past lol. Here are some random photos taken around Koh Samui. It was really nice to be there without many tourists around. I think if I return in the future, when tourists are all back in full force, I wouldn't enjoy it as much. I would like to go back eventually though.

There were some pretty steep parts and it was very exhausting to go up (combined with the heat). Suddenly there was a huge storm and we got caught in the middle of nowhere with no cover. I got completely drenched. About 20 minutes later, the sun came back out. I think these photos were taken right before the downpour and I was thinking what a nice day it was lol.

He belongs to one of the nearby houses and is an outdoor dog. He would always be so happy to see us and run up when he saw us going to the restaurant. Sadly he's full of fleas though. He constantly scratches himself. We decided to get him some medication for it which we tried our best to feed once a week but I'm not sure if it did anything..

Koh Samui Part 7 | Wild Cottages Luxury & Natural

Unfortunately the COVID situation here in Thailand is not getting any better. It's getting worse and worse by the day and I think there is a risk of us being banned entry to many other countries soon. Also we are currently in Bangkok, probably the worst city in the country to be in at the moment because of the semi-lockdown. Now all domestic flights in and out of Bangkok have been suspended for 2 weeks. It would have been nice to be in Koh Samui at this time. So now we are making plans to leave the country soon. Hopefully before it's too late. I don't know where we will go yet but likely somewhere in Europe again..

I wish Asia wasn't like this now. I would have really liked to visit some other nearby countries as well, especially Hong Kong again but I'm sure they will remain closed for a long time. Now we will have been in Thailand for approximately 4 months. At least we got to see a lot of the country (Bangkok, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Pai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, etc.) If we were not "stuck" in Thailand and just travelling freely, I think we would have just visited Bangkok and Koh Samui and left. Now I'm glad we got to experience the other parts as well.

I'm so behind on my posts because I haven't had the time to update my blog these days. I've been really busy with work and I can't be as productive when just working from our place (instead of in a coffee shop which isn't possible now as they are all closed). I don't think it is possible for me to post all my Thailand posts before leaving here. I am maybe 14 posts behind lol.

So here was our place in Koh Samui where we stayed the last days on the island. We had booked a month elsewhere but then due to lack of flights into Chiang Mai, we had to book an extra 5 nights here which I'm so glad we did. I really loved it! I would've gladly stayed much longer. It's called Wild Cottages and located on a hill overlooking Lamai Beach. I think they have 7 cottages in total, all with an outdoor terrace and small pool. It was such a relaxing stay. Also their service is amazing!

It's a Thai-Chinese village, populated with migrants from Yunnan province in China. The village is surrounded by tea plantations and offer tea tastings at their tea house. I'm not sure how busy this place gets during tourist season (non-covid times) but I imagine it's not very well known yet. It was quite of a drive in from the main road as well. I really liked it.

It was a park with a river full of fish running through, then at the very end there's a small cave with a lot of fish inside. You can buy buckets of food to feed them (containing fruits, leafy vegetables, dried coconut, kibble and dead cicadas).

As usual we were the only ones there. It's known as the longest bamboo bridge in Thailand and people go there to give alms to the monks. It would have been interesting to experience that and a beautiful site (I think at sunset they light up the sides of the bridge with fire). Now the place feels a bit run down. I imagine it hasn't been used in ages.

It was definitely a fun experience driving along there, and I'm so glad I didn't get carsick. Unfortunately we didn't actually do the full circle/loop though due to time constraints (looking back I guess we should've booked an extra day..I didn't realize the driving took so long). We went from Chiang Mai to Pai, then Pai to Mae Hong Son and turned back from there to take the same route back to Chiang Mai.
