388. Prague

Prague architecture
I just realized that all my posts for the past month and a half are food related! I have a couple more of those lined up but to prevent my blog from turning fully into a food blog, I'll get back into the travel posts for awhile. ;) Here are some photos of Prague that I haven't posted yet. I think I already told all the stories of my time there (that I want to reveal) in the previous posts, so this one will be all photos.

These next few shots were taken when I was on the Deutsche Bahn bus on my way to Munich..so please try to ignore the bug-splatted windows. I had the best seat at the very front on the top level!

375. Prague | Memories

Astronomical Clock
I can't believe I still have photos left to post from my 2012 Europe trip! Next time I go on vacation I definitely won't procrastinate with my travel posts again (I think I say this every time). In case you're bored with all the London and Paris photos I've been posting lately, here's one of my favourite cities - Prague. The few days I spent in Prague that summer were some of the most fun I've had in Europe (so far). I enjoyed the city so much, I must go back again someday..preferably in the winter. I'm sure it would be a lot more magical and picturesque with snow-covered rooftops.

Absinthe shop Prague
That trip to Europe was the first time I ever travelled alone (I prefer it over travelling with someone/people now). I was so happy and excited whenever I met the locals, I talked to everyone who made conversation with me. It was extremely easy in Prague. On my first walk around the area, in the span of an hour I probably met about 20 people with more dinner/drinks/club invitations than I had time for. The most fun was with these guys, and the worst was probably this experience I had sitting across this absinthe shop. Well, when I think back it seemed a bit dangerous. Now that I have more experience travelling alone, I am no longer as trusting of random strangers.
I don't remember if I wrote about this before already. I was trying to find my way to Charles Bridge and took a wrong turn. I ended up sitting on a bench here to look at the map. A guy came up and sat beside me. The first thing he said to me was "do you want a sip?" as he offered his bottle of water. I said no. He asked me where I was from, what I was doing in Prague, etc. He was from Russia but went back and forth quite often. Then he showed me a piece of paper and a whip. I asked what the whip was for and he said it was decoration for a house, as he was an interior designer. Hmmmm....
Then he said he was going to put up the piece of paper/sign in his shop and will be back to bring me to Charles Bridge. He told me to wait for him. So he left and I just stayed at the bench..I didn't really care about waiting for him, but I was so tired (remember not to wear heels in the cobblestone streets of Prague) so I needed the rest. He came back in about 20min and was surprised I was still there. We chatted some more and he asked if I wanted to wait for him to get his car, so he could drive me around and to Charles Bridge. I said sure. I have no idea what I was thinking but for some reason I was actually considering getting in the car. So he left again to get his car..and suddenly I started thinking of different scenarios like him driving me to an unknown place and not letting me get out. I knew Charles Bridge was a couple minutes' walk from where I was, so I knew he wasn't planning on driving me there. After a few more horrific possible scenarios passed through my mind..I immediately got up and walked away as fast as I could. I made it safely to Charles Bridge. I ended up meeting someone else (who wasn't as weird) who brought me out for drinks and around the city. Fun night!

295. Praha | déjà vu

Old Town Square Prague El Toro Negro
Every time I look at my vacation photos of Prague I think to myself "sigh I miss it..I need to go back asap". It's kind of funny - when I think back on the first solo vacation I ever took this year, even I find it hard to believe everything went smoothly and I managed it all by myself (as sometimes I have trouble finding my way around Toronto hahah) 1 month, 7 countries, countless flights, trains, new acquaintances, overcoming my fear of dining alone in restaurants, etc..
Anyway I am off to another staycation in the city right after I finish this blog post so I'll make it quick:

Normally I am very bad with faces - I forget what acquaintances look like within mere minutes of first meeting them but I will always vividly remember what the four backpackers who sat across from me on my first Tube ride in London looked like. Three girls, one boy, looked about 19? We all got on the train at Heathrow's tube station on the Piccadilly line. All I had with me was my Alma bag as Air Canada had unfortunately lost/delayed my luggage, so without having to worry about lugging around a heavy suitcase I decided to attempt the Tube for the first time.
The backpackers all had a huge backpack (naturally), extra suitcases and took up half the aisle. I sat directly in front facing them and thought "wow these Tube trains were not made for the claustrophobic". I was sitting there in the middle of what seemed like mountains of luggage around me (as most people got on from the airport) I was exhausted and stressed out of my mind wondering if my luggage would ever return..so the entire ride into the city I stared straight ahead at the four backpackers, listening to every single word they said and watching them eat every bite of their sandwiches (behind my sunglasses..I didn't want to seem so obviously creepy). So I think that's why I remember so clearly what they looked like.
Anyway the point of this long story...
I spent 2 nights in London, 2 nights in Copenhagen, then went on to Prague. I arrived in Prague, dropped my luggage off in my hotel and walked straight to Old Town Square. I sat down and who's the first (of first 4) people I see walk past me? The four backpackers from London!! That was when I realized how extremely small the world was. I had the same incident when I arrived in Paris but I'll tell that story another time..

Prague marionettes
These marionettes were my favourite souvenirs from Prague. I wanted to buy every single one of them. In the end, I didn't buy any..partly because they were too big for my luggage and partly because I thought every time I looked at one it would bring a certain memory I do not want to remember..lol (again, another story for another time)

matryoshka dolls
Matryoshka heaven!! I got way too excited when I saw all these Matryoshkas in every souvenir shop (I collect them) I spent so much time trying to decide which one to get. Then I was told they didn't have much to do with Czech culture/history so I decided not to get any. I'll stock up next time I visit Russia so they're more authentic and special.

After Prague I was supposed to go to Munich. I missed not one but two trains/buses to go there..that was probably a sign I should've stayed in Prague! lol.
