848. Tallinn Part 3 | Medieval Restaurants

The old town in Tallinn has a lot of medieval style buildings and restaurants. We visited three of them. The main one is Olde Hansa which is one of my favourite restaurants here. We came here for the first time on our first day in Tallinn then several times after. It's a huge space, with 3 (or 4) floors. The staff are dressed in medieval garb and even speak the part (and they reuse the same jokes). Sometimes they have live music playing themed music. Inside it's quite dark and only lit with candles. Even though it's a touristy place, the food is really good. The photo above shows their entrance, where they have a stand selling freshly roasted honey-coated almonds.

I always get the sausages dish which are a mix of bear, wild boar and elk meat. Along with a honey beer.

Another place we went is Ill Draakon. I really loved it here too. It's a tiny tavern style place inside the town hall building. The photo above shows the entrance. Their menu is extremely limited but everything is delicious and very cheap.

The elk meat soup here was probably one of the best soups I've ever had. It's really really good.

Lastly we also went to Peppersack. I liked it here as well but the experience in the other two restaurants are a lot more authentic. Here I had moose meat.

842. Tallinn Part 2 | Back in Estonia

In between my previous blog post and this one, we have spent several days in Paris. Blog posts from that trip will come eventually. It was kind of a "last minute decision" to return to Estonia after that. Well, I didn't have many options anyways since it's the only Schengen country I'm allowed to be in at the moment. At the time of this post I'm unfortunately still waiting on the result from my Digital Nomad Visa application..the deadline is in a few days so that will determine what happens after Estonia (if I am forced to leave Schengen).

Now it has gotten a lot colder here in Tallinn and we even got snow a couple days ago, though it has all melted since then. The Christmas Market here is set to open tomorrow which I'm very excited for! I really love Christmas Markets in Europe, and I heard this one in Tallinn is rated one of the best. It's very sad that the markets of Germany are closed this year since they received an influx of COVID cases these past weeks. I've always wanted to go to the ones there. We were lucky to have visited (Munich) last month when it was still relatively normal.

Maiasmokk is one of my favourite cafes in the city. I really love cafes (or restaurants) in this style. It's the oldest cafe in the city, dating back to 1864, and known for their marzipan. Apparently they are the "birthplace of marzipan".

Pelmeni are Russian dumplings. I really love them.

I think this is the best rated restaurant in the city. It's called Rataskaevu 16 which is also just their address. I got the elk roast which was delicious.

This was Siga La Vaca, an Argentinian steakhouse. Of course I rarely order steak at steakhouses. I got the octopus which I was a bit sceptical about at first (I don't think Estonia is known for octopus) but it ended up being really good.

821. Chiang Mai Part 2 | Temples & Airniversary

Time is passing by very fast as usual. I can't believe we are already down to our last 10 days here in Chiang Mai. Last weekend we had a short road trip around the Northern parts of the country (around Pai and Mae Hong Son). The scenery was amazing and I really enjoyed the little villages along the way. I will post more about that in a future post.

For now, here are some more random photos from around Chiang Mai. This temple is my favourite here. It is called Wat Chedi Luang, estimated to be built between 1385-1402. I guess it's not extremely old but to me it looks quite ancient. Sitting atop each of the 4 sides is a large buddha.

This cafe/restaurant is called Airniversary. We've been here a few times to eat and read our books in their treehouse upstairs. It's a pretty uniquely decorated place. They have 3 different floors so it's pretty big, but we are always the only ones there (a common theme of COVID).

One thing I noticed here is there are a LOT of massage parlors who employ ex (and current) prisoners. They do make it a known fact though, such as this one above and also below. This one is decorated to look like it's a fun place to be (they even have a photo sign "Welcome to Prison" lol)

This coffee chain, Graph Coffee, was really good. They only serve coffee but mixed with a lot of unconventional ingredients. It was like coffee cocktails (without alcohol). I actually never drink coffee and this was the first time I've ever ordered one for myself lol. It was really good.
