606. Recent Life

leftbanked outfit
So I have one more post left from my Rockies Roadtrip...then I should get back to posting the rest from my Asia trip which was exactly one year ago!!! My Asia trip last year was Oct 14 to Nov 8 2016. Right now I still have 32 more posts to make from that lol. & I am determined to post it all. I think I will be going back to Asia (& Europe) within the next year so I should finish those posts before my next trip.

The weather here in Toronto has gotten really cold now. I started wearing my winter clothes and last night I even turned on the heat. I can't believe it's almost the Christmas season again. This year flew by so fast. It feels like just yesterday I was in Asia when it was already a year ago. & I still remember my Christmas and New Year's celebrations as if they just happened. It was a really good year for me (starting with my major renovations which I am still obsessed with and haven't fully completed yet) and right now I am probably the happiest I've ever been. I am excited for what is to come. It's funny how life can change so drastically and unexpectedly in such a short amount of time. More on this in a future post. It's still too early to do a "year in review" type of post lol.

Here are some photos from the past few weeks which I realize now consist of 90% food. I am going to make a conscious effort from now on to take less food pics and more of other things (like I used to do years ago on this blog)

Sud Forno Temperence
I recently discovered Sud Forno which actually opened a few months ago, literally a 3 minute walk from my place, and I can't believe it took me so long to go. It's not my new food/restaurant addiction. I even came here one day when I wasn't even hungry but just for the sake of going since I love it so much. The food is really good and the decor is beautiful.

Torta Caprese
Something maybe a bit strange about me is that I really dislike chocolate. The only chocolate-y thing I LOVE is Torta Caprese. I first tried this when I went to Capri last year and my hotel gave me a delicious one. Since then I have tried to find a good one in Toronto but haven't been successful until I discovered Sud Forno's. It was amazing. Tastes a bit different from the one I had in Capri but it was still delicious and I will be going back quite often for it.

pumpkin pasta
You may remember my pumpkin obsession which started at the beginning of Autumn. Tonight I finally made a pumpkin pasta which was I must say is really really good. I don't know why I didn't think it would be that good when I first started making it lol. It is probably my favourite pasta I've ever made. I made it with pumpkin puree, spinach, mushrooms, and a bit of coconut milk. I have a few more cans of pumpkin so trying to decide what to make next.

581. Recent Food | Cooking & Eating Out

baking
Ever since I got my newly renovated kitchen, I've been cooking a lot. I won't say "a lot more" because back then I literally never cooked lol. Cooking is actually pretty fun. There's a lot of recipes I want to try but not enough time...and well, I can only eat so much in a day. I really like baking. I want to get a nice blue (or bright pink) Kitchenaid stand mixer. So far I've been mixing everything by hand and I'm not that good at thick mixtures..or kneading dough. So here are some things I've recently cooked, as well as restaurant meals mixed in. I've had several failed recipes (gnocchi from scratch, apple pie from scratch, etc) that I decided not to take pictures of lol.

shepherds pie
Shepherd's Pie! Half eaten. It was my first time making it and it actually turned out really really good. Probably one of the best shepherd's pies I've ever eaten. I am not just saying that because I made it myself (I can admit most things that I make don't taste that amazing yet since I'm a beginner cook hahah). I want to make it again soon but it takes a lot of time.

nachos
Nachos from Against the Grain

roast chicken and potatoes
Another dinner I cooked - roast chicken thighs with potatoes and peas, cooked in white wine.

pasta florentine
I made WAY too much of this. & I didn't really like it. It was pasta with chicken, spinach and tomatoes. Actually it would have tasted really good if I didn't put so much cream in there because it was way too heavy/filling for me.

garlic shrimp
shrimp scampi
My sister came over one day and we made a shrimp scampi pasta for lunch. It was soooo good. I never used to eat shrimp when I was younger but now I love it, and it's so easy to cook. I've made this a couple times already.

kale salad
Strawberry Kale Salad at Amsterdam BrewHouse. This place is awesome during the summer for drinks at the patio (it's beside the lake) but the food isn't the best. It was a hot day so I wanted to get something light and cold so I went for a salad. They really skimp on the strawberries here lol. It's supposed to be a strawberry kale salad but there was literally only three thin slices of strawberry. So not even a full strawberry. Also three thin slices of apple.

cinnamon apple slices
Preparing my apple slices for an apple cake. The apple slices were tossed in lemon juice, brown sugar and cinnamon. I ate a few slices just like that and they were so delicious! Here was the final product:

apple cake
In terms of cakes, so far I've made carrot cake, apple cake and banana bread/cake. Banana is my favourite. I've baked each of those cakes a few times each already so I've kind of "perfected" the recipes by now. The banana one is a bit annoying to make because you always have to wait until the bananas are super ripe. So you always need to plan ahead on when you can make it.

apple pie King Edward Hotel
The most delicious apple pie at King Edward Hotel! I love how the pie crust was in the shape of an apple. I wonder how they made it like that. Now that I'm all into cooking, whenever I eat out and like something I always want to try to make it myself. This was what inspired me to make my own apple pies (which I failed at).

Epic Toronto apple tart
& Royal York Hotel's version of apple pie..

Pearl Diver burger
Also now that I've been cooking, whenever I eat out at restaurants I try to order things I cannot/wouldn't want to cook myself. This was a dinner at Pearl Diver where I got a burger and a side of garlic shrimp. When the shrimp came I immediately thought..I shouldn't have ordered it since I could've just made it at home lol. They were good though. But I actually thought the ones I made with the shrimp scampi tasted better..

Pizzeria Libretto calamari arancini
& finally this was a dinner one night with my family at Pizzeria Libretto (again!). As appetizers we got calamari as usual, and arancini balls which didn't taste as good as I had hoped they would. But they are one of my favourite places for calamari in the city.

502. Rome | Snapshots Part 3

Trevi Fountain
First of all...what do you think of my new logo?? I can't believe (after 8 years of blogging) I finally have one made. I actually got two different ones made because I couldn't choose between the two concepts. I will probably alternate between them each month or so. I won't reveal the other one until then. I love hot air balloons, even though I've unfortunately never had the chance to go on one yet. However it is very high on my bucket list. So I wanted to incorporate that in some way, and also to illustrate the idea of travel. This image and font were hand-drawn and custom made by the designer..I love it a lot!!

Here are some more random images from my trip to Rome.

Trevi Fountain Rome
I love the Trevi Fountain. I mentioned this before that it's one of my favourite attractions in Rome..I just find the blue shade of the water so beautiful against the white marble sculptures. It's also ridiculously crowded there ALL THE TIME..and takes a lot of patience to be able to walk close enough to get a good shot.

These street painters were pretty entertaining to watch. Here is a short video I took of one. I really liked the music they were playing too so I stood there quite a while to watch..
